What is meant by poor job performance?

Poor job performance refers to when an employee has an inability to perform their work to the extent where there are grounds for termination if the employee's job performance is of lower quality than what the employer could have expected. This can include:

  • An employee taking an unreasonably long time to complete their tasks
  • Performing tasks in a poor manner
  • The cost of the employee being higher than the income they generate for the employer.

Before an employer can terminate an employee due to their poor job performance, the employer must attempt to find other solutions. These solutions can include training or reassignment.

As always, it is important to ensure that the employer and employee are in agreement regarding the expectations of the work to be performed. If the employee has provided an inaccurate picture of what the employer can expect, it can create situations as described above.
